2008 Presidential Election: Oprah vs. Hillary

I know that Oprah isn't running, but boy if she was..that would be the bombalicious election of all times! I wouldn't know which campaign to join. Here's my breakdown on how both women compare to each other.

Non-Presidential Related Issues that are equally as important (according to women)

Best Wardrobe: Oprah
Best Evening Gown: Oprah. Did you see her in that red Vera Wang at her Legends Ball
Best Party at the Whitehouse: Oprah. Turning 50 will never be the same.
Most Likely to Win the Hearts of the People: Oprah. She's been poor, rich, fat, skinny, abused, black, white (well they count her as one)
Best Presidential Speech: Oprah
Best Interior Designing of the Whitehouse: Oprah

Presidential Related Issues:

Affirmative Action: Tie
Civil Rights: Tie
Crime: They'd probably share the same view
Preservation of the Family: Oprah (my guess)
Economic improvement: Hilary
Education: Oprah, hands down (remember the teacher hookup. You win a car! You win a car!)
Foreign Policy: Hilary, but Oprah would clean up some stuff in the motherland.
Court System: Neither (they are both too liberal in my opinion)
Gun Control: Tie
National Debt: Oprah. She could finance it from her personal wealth
Social Security Reform: Yeah Right!!!
Homeland Security: Hilary. Bill is cool with everybody around the world.
Gas Prices: Yeah right. How would either of them know what the gas prices are? They have chauffeurs.
Home Ownership: Tie.

Okay, so Oprah would win according to my vote. Hilary is our closest bet to getting a sister into the Whitehouse. (Unless Ms. Rice decides to run.) Now that would be interesting! No offense to our past distinguished presidents, but a woman in the whitehouse = get stuff done the right way the first time around.

Can secular artists be gospel artists too? The Kanye E-Debate

This came from an e-conversation I had with some of my closest girlfriends after the BET Awards show. What do you think? Is there a right or wrong answer to this question? We will certainly see more of this debate in the future as the day comes.

Initial Statement from Me:
Why was Konye West nominated for Best Gospel album???!!!!

Friend’s Response:
What is really the problem with Kanye and SOME other secular music artists worshipping God and having secular albums? I know what the standard arguments will be, but really how many people avoid sin totally? You understand that if you say all or nothing how many people turn away from God and Christianity because true legalism is intimidating as it seems virtually unattainable.

I guess I can relate because I LOVE God, I love praising him and could shout right now just thinking about all he is doing and has done for me. Even still I like to and listen to secular music, and I don't realistically think I'll be giving either up anytime soon so does that mean I am not allowed to go to church and raise my hands to God?

All in all I like Kanye's effort because he never has claimed to be perfect, but he is relating in song and in life the paradox that most everyone juggles God vs. World. For by Grace are you saved, it is a gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2: 8-9 (Thank God for the gift of grace because if I had to earn it I would be in BIG trouble)

Other friend’s response:
I understand what you're saying. Don't get me wrong, “Jesus Walks” is a powerful song and Kanye's other songs are on the tame side, but with all the really great gospel artists, I just don't see how he could be nominated for best gospel artist. If it was truly a Christian rap album, then cool.

I mean, I know none of us are perfect but I think there are some things that just aren't of God...and I think there's a difference between trying to follow God and falling short because of our human nature and intentionally indulging in worldliness to come up in life. For me, I really can't understand it when rappers with sexually explicit albums or cursing and everything else on it, get up there and credit God for what they're doing. God is so totally not about those things. And some people say, oh well I'm just being real so I can reach out to folk but I really don't think God needs the help of all that sex, violence and cursing to reach and change someone.

When it comes down to it, people have to make choices...you're either light or dark, you serve God or you serve Satan, etc. When it comes time for judgment, there's no in between but you'd never know that from what a lot of these celebrities show us.

My Final Response:
We have to think about those who don't know Christ at all. If they see us acting a fool like that, that is what they will believe our faith is all about. It will have no substance and we will continue to be a weak church full of wishy-washy saints who have no real power. None of us are close to being perfect, and we are not saying that you earn salvation. That is a gift like you said. If you sincerely believe in Jesus Christ and confess him, you are born again.

However, most Christians bypass the next step of our salvation - sanctification. The bible speaks just as much about sanctification as it does salvation. Today, people don't want to hear that. "We are justified by our works and not faith alone." Our works should be the evidence of our faith. When Paul (a murderer and persecutor of the church) got saved, he put up his old ways and used his zeal and passion to become one of the most significant persons of all time. He still struggled. Remember, "The things I don't want to do, I do and the things I want to do, I don't do them." But, he was committed to not letting his flesh deceive or hurt others. Rather we like it or not, Christians in public positions have a greater burden. You are influencing hundreds and thousands of souls, and if they are Christians, they will not take that calling lightly as any of us should.

We can discern Kanye's message because we know the truth. But think about an unbeliever, someone who had never heard God's word or understood anything about Jesus. If he/she went out and bought that album, chances are that person would be confused about our faith because of the mixed messages. Now, if I bought it, it wouldn't bother me because I can discern what he is trying to say.

I am not judging him, just calling out the truth based on God's word. I do the same thing to myself, so I won't be a hypocrite. There is a psalm or proverb that says, "Out of the mouth flows the issues of the heart." (What we talk about and do the most is who we truly are.) I am not perfect by any means, so please don't think I'm advocating judgment. What I do advocate is the truth even more as it applies to my own life. I'm just trying to point out that we should love one another enough to say what is right and wrong based on God's word.

So to all the artists out there...stop confusing the gospel!!!

Do Not Call List

Okay,

It would be selfish for me not to pass this along. One of my friends forwarded it to me. If you are sick and tired of being harassed in the privacy of your own home or car, please get on the list.

"JUST A REMINDER: On Sept. 1, CELL PHONE numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR MINUTES OF THESE CALLS. To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years.

Happy blocking,

Kidd Grown

The sun is always brighter on the weekend.

Throughout my life, I’ve always noticed that the weekend was different (in nature) from the weekday. Even before I had a job and spent most of my day sitting inside of a cubicle, I could tell that things were just different on Saturday and Sunday.

For example, I know that all of you taken the day off from work at some point. Didn’t it seem kind of normal to you even though you didn’t have to go into the office? Nothing really amazed you. The trees looked the same. So did the grass. You may have noticed a bird or squirrel but nothing out of the norm. Okay, now think about the weekend. When you wake up, doesn’t it seem like the sun is shining brighter? It’s still 7:00 AM like every day when you awake, but for some reason it’s just brighter. Then, there’s that feeling of peace running through your veins and in the air of your home. You can just lie there for hours doing nothing and be absolutely content.

My point is this. Enjoy your weekend, by first bathing in the presence of God. The peace of a still weekend morning reveals the brighter shining of the sun, the clearer chirps of the birds and the louder blowing of the wind. You are witnessing God’s presence throughout the earth.

Your assignment this weekend is to turn on some soft music, and simply stare out the window. What do your eyes see? What picture does your mind paint? What do your ears hear? What does your heart feel in its inner most part? I hope that you will feel God’s amazing presence overwhelm you as you worship him.

As a matter of fact, sleep with your blinds open (if you feel comfortable) and let the sun wake you up instead of your alarm clock. It is a beautiful way to start your day. I started doing this when I lived in Atlanta and my apartment was surrounded by trees. Today, I still look forward to Saturday morning. Not that I get up right away, but I roll over and stare out the window just looking and creation. Last week, I saw the cutest little red bird. He was just chirping away like he was so happy. I would have never noticed that bird during the week because I am too busy being preoccupied with life. It is during this time, I have found closeness with God that I cannot explain. It feels like He is standing right over me breathing and comforting my soul.

He is perfect, excellent and beautiful! Heaven must be beyond description. No wonder John fell to his face and began to worship when he saw Jesus in Revelation. No wonder Moses came down from the mountain with a face glowing of radiance. No wonder David said that his one desire was to “dwell in the house of the Lord forever, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” These great men caught a glimpse of God’s beauty and splendor and had no choice but to worship Him.

Sometimes we think that worship is limited to the church building or falling on our knees at home. If he desires for us to worship him in spirit and truth, then sometimes we can just gaze at his creation uninterrupted and immediately be transported into his presence.
My friend, I hope this is your one desire today. Out of all the goals we set for ourselves, let this be our greatest: That one day we will see the Lord face to face and worship Him in the presence of the angels. In the meantime, let us make every effort to worship Him in all that we do.

"P . Diddy," I mean Diddy" must be stopped!

Can somebody please tell Sean Combs a.k.a. Puff Daddy/Puffy/P. Diddy/and now Diddy to get somewhere and sit down. Who cares if he wants to change his name. And why was that on the Today show? Aren't there plenty of other newsworthy events to cover. Now, Puffy is a strong black man who is extremely brilliant in my opinion, but this is just madness. I guess he had to go and do something to prove his popularity. He has been quiet lately. No more "Loose Control" for you buddy.

What is this country coming to? And what is it really coming to for black folks? The only time we get to be on the news is when some crime has occurred or some crazy musical artist does something outrageous. Hasn't Oprah been working on a project in Africa all year? Can't they cover that?

What is really going. I'm just trying to understand.

Part 1: If one more person asks me why I'm still single...

I'm going to ________________. (Fill in the blank if you are feeling me. I'd love to hear more.)

You know. I do not even have words for this anymore. Other than, "Don't ask me that stupid question again." Can I just be real for a moment? For some strange reason this seems my BIG secret, and I am not willing to tell anybody. (Twilight Zone music fades in.)

From family to friends to complete strangers, why do people ask me this question as if this is an equation where we have to find the missing variable, X. I've got news for you: This ain't algebra class. There is no reason. Simply put, "It is not my time, and I am 100% cool with God's plan." (Note: I am human and do have my moments.)

Sometimes people treat me like I'm a social reject or something, and I'm getting pretty sick of it. So, I am standing up for all the singles out there who share my pain. Do people seriously believe that this is a huge problem that I must resolve in order to be happy and have a complete life? News flash: This is not a problem for me. Now, I've got some problems don't get me wrong, but this really ain't one of them. This is a problem: How I'm going to pay for my tuition bill this last semester for b-school. And this is a problem: How am I going to discipline myself to finish this business plan.

Want to hear some funny solutions that have been posed to me? I have too much personality. (What the heck does "too much" mean? Hmm, I can't seem to find that phrase defined anywhere in my HANDY DANDY SINGLE DICTIONARY!) This one is the killer: You're just too educated, independent and career-driven. (Excuse me, but what is the scriptural reference stating that I am REQUIRED to be poor, uneducated and co-dependent? I can't seem to find it in my GREAT BIG SINGLE BIBLE!) It is amazing what people will tell you even though I know 99% of them mean well. As if I don't have a single redeeming quality about me.

Honestly, this really gets on my nerves. I am not looking for an apology or a pep talk here either. I'm just expressing myself. I know that we all have something to change and work on, but that's life, right?

World according to the Kidd - A problem is something or situation that appears to have no solution, but one actually exists. You can by some means solve it vis-a-vie acquiring more resources, getting someone to help, improving your skills, increasing your knowledge and so forth. Now, can I do any of those things to solve this perceived problem of my singlehood? I think not. Been there, done that, and got a t-shirt.

Hope I didn't get too crunk there. Think of it more as a healthy frustration sprinkled with a pinch of sarcasm.

I have been studying a lot about this topic for the past 3 years or so and have much to say about it. So I've decided to chop it up a little. But before I get to Part II, I'm interested in the thoughts of those of you in e-land. I am getting sleepy now. You know us single folks have to work.

On the positive closing note: What a lovely day it has been for me! "God is light, and in him, there is no darkness at all." Isn't that beautiful? (1 John 1:5) He is my best friend. I hope that He is yours.

Good night,

1 Corinthians: Chapter 7

First day of school

Okay,

I was not the only one over-reacting. These parents had video cameras, digital cameras...some people had the whole family there. I didn't realize how special this moment was for the parent. This is monumental! The kids all had the same look on their faces ("mom..PLEASE!!"). My niece even tried to get a little attitude with me when we got closer to her room, as if I wasn't so cool anymore. She got a little frustrated because I kept taking pictures of her. I HAD TO TAKE HER MOMMA SOMETHING!!! My sister would kill me if I didn't get pictures of her baby on the first day. I'll add some pictures later today when I figure out how to work this camera.

My nephew basically told me to get lost in so many words. He didn't want me to walk him to his classroom. I guess that's cool since he is in the 4th grade. They all looked so cute. My other nephew was supposed to ride his bike, but his mom changed her mind so I had to take him too. He forgot his schedule and locker code, so I had to get out and go to the office with him. That was fun. He had Competitive Athletics first. I remember those days. All the future athletes sit in the gym to get assigned those ugly uniforms. He's in middle school and will be playing football. He's a tight end, and the boy can hit!

Overall, this was a very positive and emotional experience for me. I woke up and prayed for them and for all the kids going to school. I found myself praying for the entire educational system. I didn't cry, though I wanted too. I just felt different. You know? Like, I wanted to keep watching them to make sure they were okay. I look forward to motherhood, but I can see already that I have some tendencies that I need to check right now. #1) Stay out of the teacher's business. #2) Don't try to run the PTA and booster club. #3) You do not have any coaching experience so be quiet. I hope I'm not bossy; I just like to know what's going on.
